Mule deer frequent the Hemp Creek-Murtle River area, caribou range the wild sections near Angus Home Lake, Battle Mountain, and Mica Mountain, and moose are most often seen in the areas south of the Murtle River and west to the Clearwater. Mountain goat usually remain in the mountainous north. Grizzly bears may be seen in any of the alpine areas and black bears are common throughout the park. Smaller animals, such as weasel, fisher, marten, mink, wolverine, beaver, squirrel, as well as coyote and timer wolf, are found in suitable habitat. In the higher regions live pika and marmot. Waterfowl are not numerous, although the park is home to birds as diverse as the golden eagle and rufous hummingbird.
One of the best areas to observe bird life is in the vicinity of the abandoned Ray Farm. Rainbow trout, Dolly Varden or lake trout inhabit most of the lakes, rivers and streams. Forest cover of Douglas fir, western red cedar and hemlock is quite dense at the lower levels, giving way, at an elevation of about 1,200 meters, to alpine fir and spruce. Above the timberline are alpine meadows and eventually, broken precipitous mountains and extensive glaciers. Cottonwood, willow, birch and trembling aspen dominate the bottomland and stream and river banks.
